Meditation In The Workplace
Having worked as an accountant in a corporate environment all my working life, this is something I feel very passionate about. Once I started meditating myself I noticed the benefits in my work life in terms of stress management, focus, emotional regulation and productivity I felt inspired to share this practice with others.
A strong driving force behind me enrolling in the teacher training program was so that I could offer meditation in the workplace.
Meditation can be incorporated in the workplace either as a regular guided practice or a one off workshop. Any workplace environment big or small can benefit from learning to meditate . It is a tool that is incredibly useful for employers as part of your workplace wellness plan for the following reasons:
A pause in the afternoon for 20-30 minutes allows a refocus at that time when employees may start to feel restless.
Improved emotional regulation and therefore interpersonal relationships. There have been neurological studies that show that a regular meditation practice strengthens the area of the brain responsible for attention, emotional regulation and compassion.
Improved employee engagement and job satisfaction due to taking regular time out to become aware of work and personal stressors that may be impacting their health and wellbeing.
Greater creativity and problem solving through expanded awareness and an openness in thinking.
Improving the relationship between employers and employees by providing the time and opportunity to experience meditation in the work place. Demonstrating the companies commitment to employees welfare.
How does it work:
The plan can be tailored to specific needs but in general terms I would come into your workplace weekly for 6 weeks and provide 30 to 40 minute weekly guided meditation sessions in a group setting. Alternatively I can create a one off workshop and then offer some follow up group practices. The practice can be done seated in chairs or on the floor so is easily set up. I would guide the group into meditation, then we would sit together in stillness for approximately 15-20 minutes.
